Employee Guidelines Related to Payroll - Sick, Personal and Annual Leave

Sick Leave
All employees entitled to earn sick leave will be credited with four (4) days as of the first day of employment of each fiscal year and one (1) day each month employed thereafter for a total of one day for each full month of employment. Sick leave cannot be used prior to the time it is earned and credited to the employee. Sick leave will be cumulative from year to year.

Accrued sick leave will be reduced to days actually earned for personnel who terminate prior to having earned sick days advanced. Note: the School Board reserves the right to withhold the hourly rate of pay for sick hours used but not yet earned for an employee who terminates his/her employment and has not yet accrued the four sick days credited to him/her.

Sick leave earned in other school districts in Florida may be transferred into Martin County. It is the employee’s responsibility to contact the previous district or agency to request the transfer. One day of transferred sick time will be credited toward the employee’s sick balance each month until the entire amount is credited.

Payroll updates the leave balances in accordance to the district policy for eligible employees. The balances for all available leave are indicated on your paycheck stub. See applicable union contract and employee handbook for district policy.

Payment for accumulated sick leave, upon resignation, retirement or death is as follows (subject to the district policy maximum):

  1. After ten years of consecutive service, the daily rate of pay multiplied by 50%, or
  2. After thirteen (13) years of consecutive service, the daily rate of pay multiplied by 100%

Personal Leave
Six (6) days of your annual accrued sick hours can be used for personal business per school calendar year. Even though the available personal hours are listed separately, you must have sick leave hours available for usage.

Annual (Vacation) Leave Benefits
Only 248-day employees are granted annual leave. Annual leave time is cumulative to 500 hours. Annual leave time will be credited each pay period. Annual accruals for twelve-month personnel are established as follows:

  1. 12 work days per year for employees who have been employed by the SchoolBoard of Martin County for less than five consecutive years;
  2. 15 work days per year for employees who have been employed by the School Board of Martin County for more than five consecutive years, but less than ten consecutive years;
  3. 18 work days per year for employees who have been employed by the School Board of Martin County for more than ten consecutive years.

Annual leave must be approved by your immediate supervisor. Annual leave generally will not be granted to school-based personnel during the time that school is in session. Annual leave schedules will be worked out on the basis of the best time in each individual case.
